The word “cigarette” comes from French. It is a diminutive of a cigare and literally means “a little cigar”. Cigarettes owe their origin to American Indians who were the first to start rolling tobacco in straw, reed and corn leaves. After tobacco had been brought to Europe the only way to enjoy smoking for the next 250 years was by means of tobacco pipes and cigars.
